An operator's switchboard once routed calls to conversations that had ended mid-sentence, reconnecting both parties at the exact word where they stopped. Operators wore two headsets and were trained never to finish anyone's sentence for them.

A cream rotary telephone once connected callers to lives formed by decisions they nearly made. Before each connection, it played a dial tone assembled from almost-spoken words, charging the conversation in certainty rather than coins.
